Amherst Islander II ferry boat
We are conscious that the community of Amherst Island is eager to see the Amherst Islander II in service. The Amherst Islander II is a ministry-owned vessel operated by Loyalist Township. MTO is working diligently, in partnership with Loyalist, to ensure its safe operation can commence as soon as possible.
 
There are still several milestones that need to be achieved before the ministry can provide a specific in-service date for the new ferry. Before the new vessel can be safely put into service, the vessel must undergo a mandatory inspection prior to being allowed to carry passengers, and the crew must also complete the necessary training certification in accordance with Transport Canada regulations.
 
The ministry and Loyalist Township are working in partnership to ensure that these matters can be resolved as soon as possible. An industry-wide shortage of seafarers has also created some challenges, however despite the delays and challenges, good progress is being made.
