CAMSafe Program launches in Loyalist Township
(Amherstview, ON) On Wednesday, The Lennox and Addington County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) met with Loyalist Township officials at the Leisure & Activity Centre in Amherstview to announce the implementation of the CAMSafe program in Loyalist Township. CAMSafe is a program aimed at creating a database of residential and commercial security cameras within a community that may act as a resource for police when investigating offences/crime.
"The program is most effective when there is high-level of community participation. Through this collaboration between the municipality and the OPP, Loyalist Township has registered all Township-owned security cameras as part of the CAMSafe database. I encourage Township residents and businesses to register their security cameras, CCTV or doorbell cameras," stated Loyalist Township Mayor, Jim Hegadorn.
When a police officer uses the CAMSafe database they will see a map of the local area. Officers can click on registered addresses to view further details, such as property owner contact information. Officers cannot access your security cameras or cloud-based accounts. If police would like to examine camera footage, they can make a request to the property owner using contact information from the database.
Mayor Hegadorn thanked the OPP "for bringing this important initiative forward and thank you to all the residents and businesses who plan to participate in this voluntary program. Together we’re improving safety in our communities."
Interested community members are only required to provide basic contact information and camera location but, can include more details if desired, such as direction the camera faces, footage retention details or screenshots of the camera view. Registrants can only view their own information and can delete their account or change their information at any time.
