Community Tre

Community Tree Initiative | Sale Opens Wednesday, March 26th at 12:00 p.m.

Loyalist Township is taking steps towards a greener and more sustainable future with the implementation of the Community Tree Initiative pilot program. This pilot program will allow 125 trees to be purchased by Loyalist Township property owners at a discounted rate of $25 per tree, normally valued at $165-$175.

On May 28, 2024, a staff report on the Community Tree Initiative was presented at the Township Council meeting. The Council approved the staff's request to apply for $15,000 in funding through the Community Grants program to support this green initiative. By offering trees at discounted rates, this program aims to enhance the Township's tree canopy and contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. "This innovative initiative aims to address our climate action goals while promoting environmental stewardship within our community," said Loyalist Township Mayor Jim Hegadorn.

The funding is based on a cost subsidy model where the Community Grants program provides the majority of the funding, and the resident provides a small contribution. The discounted rates are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with each property owner eligible to purchase one tree. The pilot program online sales open on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. Once the pilot program is complete, Township staff and Council will review feedback and gauge the pilot program's success before deciding upon next steps.

"This program not only supports the environmental goals of our Climate Action Plan but also enhances community involvement and awareness in our sustainable initiatives," said Dan Hendry, Climate Action Coordinator.

Interested in purchasing a tree? Quantities are limited, so we encourage those interested to save the date and get online as soon as possible to ensure they are one of the 125 participating households in the pilot program. Township staff will follow up with successful residents to explain the program details, pick-up information, and planting guidelines.
