In Ontario, April and May months are coyote denning season when pups are born. Prior to giving birth coyotes build a den or look for a protected area to use as a den.

Ontario.ca has many tips to discourage coyotes from entering your property including closing off spaces under decks, porches and sheds as coyotes may try to use these areas as a den.

Additionally, keeping properties clear of garbage, food, brush, and wood piles can help coyote proof your property. Place garbage and recycling out in the morning instead of the night before to prevent attracting coyotes. Motion sensor lighting make your property less appealing at night.

If you encounter a coyote during denning season they may be near a den and become protective of their territory, keep your distance and the animal will most likely avoid you.

If you encounter an aggressive animal:

  • do not turn your back or run.
  • remain calm - stand tall, wave your hands, and make lots of noise while slowly backing away.
  • If a wild animal poses an immediate threat or danger to public safety — call 911
