Ameriks Grant Application
The Ameriks Scholarship Fund (Amherst Island) is a reserve fund established in 1991, in memory of Reeve Frank Fleming, for the purpose of building pride in academic achievements by providing financial assistance to eligible, post-secondary students who have been residents of Amherst Island for a period of five years or longer. Students must provide proof of registration and full-time attendance at a recognized university or college.
The fund is named after the original contributor, Alberts Ameriks, who emigrated from Latvia to Canada and became a resident and property owner of Amherst Island in 1951. In 1990 Mr. Ameriks donated $10,000 to the Township of Amherst Island in memory of his good friend, Reeve Frank Fleming. Mr. Ameriks eventually left Amherst Island for other parts of Ontario until his return to Latvia in 1992; he died in 1997 as a Lt. Colonel in the Latvian Army, with full military honours.
