Emergency Preparedness
How do we prepare for emergencies?
Provincial Emergency Management Strategy and Action Plan
The Province of Ontario has a Provincial Emergency Management Strategy and Action Plan which acts as a roadmap for whole-of-Ontario approach to keep the people of Ontario safe, practiced and prepared. The plan sets a foundation for emergency management in Ontario, informed by emergency events across the province, and placing the most vulnerable at the centre of planning, preparedness and mitigation. The action-oriented plan includes goals and actions designed to keep Ontario in a state of constant readiness and preparedness – both now and in the future.
Municipalities play a critical role in addressing emergencies at the local level and are the first line of emergency preparedness, planning, mitigation, response and recovery.
Loyalist Township Emergency Plan
The Emergency Plan for Loyalist Township has been developed to reflect the public safety requirements of our community. The effective use and maintenance of this plan are reliant upon all concerned being aware of its provisions and prepared to fulfill their roles and responsibilities in the event of an emergency. Responsible individuals are expected to participate in emergency training and exercises which will assist them in the fulfillment of their roles accordingly.
We have an Emergency Control Group that can be activated in the event of an emergency, to manage the emergency and also to keep residents informed. The Control Group also cooperates with emergency services from the County of Lennox and Addington and Emergency Management Ontario.
How can you prepare for emergencies?
Make a plan |
In an emergency, your family may not be together, or you may be asked to evacuate your home. Thinking about what you would do in different situations and preparing a plan with every member of your family is the first step to being prepared. |
Build a kit |
Your emergency survival kit should have everything you and your family would need to be safe and take care of yourselves for at least three days immediately following an emergency. |
Be informed |
Sign up for CodeRED alerts from Loyalist Township so we can communicate with you quickly and efficiently in an emergency. Alert Ready in Ontario is part of a national service designed to deliver Canadians' critical and potentially life-saving emergency alert messages. If you hear the emergency alert on your smartphone, stop, listen, and respond to the information it shares. |
Other planning tools |
These publications from the Government of Canada have helpful information on preparing for specific situations that can happen in Loyalist Township: |
Red Envelope Program
In 2023, Loyalist Township introduced the Red Envelope Program. The concept is quite simple, residents are provided with a red envelope and an emergency patient information form. Residents fill the information in on the form including any allergies, medication, medical history, family doctor and an alternate contact. The form goes in the envelope and the envelope gets attached to the fridge.
Benefits |
Having this information available to first responders in an emergency situation can be a difference maker when a person is in medical distress and is unable to communicate with the attending emergency personnel. |
Emergency Pet Car Information Form |
An additional, optional Emergency Pet Care Information form is included for residents who also want to provide information on how to best care for their pets. |
Pick Up Locations |
The Red Envelope Program is available for pickup for no charge at:
