Hazards and Spills
When a pollutant is spilled into the environment, it's the job of the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) to ensure that whoever created the spill contains it and cleans it up in accordance with MECP guidelines.
What is a spill?
A spill is defined as he release of pollutant into the natural environment originating from a structure, vehicle, or other container, that is abnormal in light of all circumstances.
Report spills to the Spills Action Centre
The Spills Action Centre is staffed 24 hours a day. They receive and record reports of spills throughout the province of Ontario and they coordinate appropriate responses.
Spills must be reported immediately to the MECP via the Spills Action Centre and to Loyalist Township when they cause or are likely to cause:
- impairment to the quality of the natural environment - air, water, or land;
- injury or damage to property or animal life;
- adverse health effects;
- safety risk;
- making property, plant, or animal life unfit for use;
- loss of enjoyment of normal use of property; or
- interference with the normal conduct of business.
